Another day, another re-score to practice!

Composing for action scenes, Batman context:
As I didn't have many contrasting scenes (only when the clock bomb appeared, lowering the music to hear the tick, but even that, not too contrasting) like in animation movies, there was not much space to plan a big "cresc." So I had to go to a thematic patterns approach, improvising theme variations for it. James Horner used this technique a lot, as did other composers.

I wanted to create tension using rising scales and punchy sounds, but our ears can get tired of all these sounds with time, and it's frustrating to compose the same sound over and over again. So manipulating synths well, not losing the energy too much in the contrast intermission, and using a lot of variation thematic patterns (like block composition) helped me keep the motivation to compose, and it improved the score.

Using Ostinatos is a good way to start if you're feeling stuck, but don't overdo it with the repetition, manipulate them as much as you can, make variations of it can help, otherwise, you'll be stuck again...

For harmony: I used prepared dissonance, chromatic mediants between minor chords, unusual chord progression prioritizing dissonance (bat theme), modulation of the melody lines using pivot chords to improve tension, and the use of the octatonic scale in the melody lines, harmonizing it, helped a lot. Sometimes you can even create a scale and harmonize it as you wish if fits your ears and the scene.

I also did rhythm overlapping, polyrhythms, polimeter, synth doublings with the bass, and percussion with filter modulation for some synths.
